The Sarner Family Album

In May of 2004, Joseph Vankay compiled this extensive family tree to commemorate Berte Rubin's 80th birthday. Each family of a Sarner sibling provided extensive details.  This involved extra effort to find information for deceased family.
Naturally, the family tree has changed since 2004 but many of the names and dates will remain accurate.

The Sarner Family Cookbook

Picture
In the late 1990s, shortly after Dorothy passed away, Elaine and Corinne wanted to commemorate the traditional Sarner family recipes that we grew up enjoying. They collected Dorothy's recipes and requested from each of the Sarner sibling families to submit:
  • Sarner recipes from each Sarner family
  • A commemoration of Sarah or a remembrance of a Sarner parent
  • A current recipe from the younger generation
  • An identification of a favorite Sarner recipe
  • An experience with a traditional Sarner dish
Photos were added to help tell family stories

Sam Sarner

Picture
Sam was the oldest son, the second child of Sarah and Benjamin. He was 3 years younger than Dorothy. He lived his married life in Regina Saskatchewan, working as a furrier. He had two children, Beverley Joan and Jack but is survived only by Jack. Sadly, Sam died in his fifties so few of us have memories of him.
In 1995, while Elaine and Corinne were preparing the Sarner Family Cookbook, Rosela, Sam’s widow, sent Corinne a collection of paperwork and pictures in response to a request for a favorite recipe and memory of a dish.
And Corinne found letters from Sam in Dorothy's papers spanning the 1940s to the 1960s. The letters showed Sam to be the caring and supportive brother and son he was.
All those documents are the basis for this biography.
Sam has no grandchildren to leave his papers to. It is hoped that this document will help his memory live on in the Sarner family.
