Dorothy's Story

Dorothy's Memoir

This memoir is dedicated to Arlene Sarner who interviewed Dorothy in the 1980s thereby creating this historical treasure. Dorothy recounted her memories of growing up in Russia, emigrating to Canada at age 13, life afterwards in Winnipeg, and finally culminating in marrying Bernard Manace after she moved to Toronto in 1930.

Arlene was kind enough to transcribe the 3 hour monologue shortly afterwards. In 2020, Corinne Schillin digitized the text and added information and pictures to provide an historical context. But Dorothy's original words have been kept virtually intact.

There are two versions of the story below. The one on the left is smaller and suitable for online viewing. The one on the right is a higher resolution, more suitable for downloading and printing.
